‘BEST’ is a battery certification program designed to reduce the lead pollution in Asia. It looks at the current policies on lead battery recycling in Asia and is working with both the government and manufacturers of batteries in order to improve the battery recycling programs. It adopts programs on recycling batteries especially lead across Asian countries one at a time. This program emphasizes on closed system. It means a factory with a collection system and closed furnace, so that anything that gets out will go through a filtration system. Improperly recycled lead batteries affects adults and children. It has severe effects on reproductive system and kidneys. Kids even die due to their parents recycling lead batteries. With BEST, a large modern plant will have less manual labour and will have modern pollution control equipment to reduce emission coming out of the stack. In a nutshell BEST is an incentive program for battery manufacturers to improve there manufacturing process, meet the specific emission targets, and to take back used batteries for proper recycling. If they do this they become eligible to be BEST certified. This certification will allow them to work with other large manufacturers who are also involved in the program by purchasing BEST-certified batteries only.
